 Steam Miscellanea

And now onto a random selection of cuttings from my ‘scrapbook’ many of which don’t have any connection with the last days of steam on BR. Let us therefore start off with a handful from a very tatty copy of the May 1959 ‘Meccano Magazine’.

46242

Two pictures of Ex. LMS  Princess Coronation Class loco. No. 46242 ‘City of Glasgow’ (left) at speed, and (below) approaching Eglinton Street with the up ‘Caledonian’.

The ‘Caledonian’

The ‘Caledonian’ was introduced in June 1957 with a schedule for a 400 minute run from London, Euston, to Glasgow Central. The total mileage to be covered was 402.4 miles which meant that a mile-a-minute average had to be maintained. Not long after the introduction of the service, Princess Coronation No. 46299 ‘Duchess of Hamilton’ completed the run in 6hrs 40 minutes to be beaten only weeks later by No. 46244 ‘King George VI’ with a timing of 6 hours and 3 minutes from Glasgow to Euston.

Fowey Castle

Two pictures of the ‘Merchant Venturer’ with ex. GWR Castle Class No. 7019 ‘Fowey Castle’ at Paddington (above) and 7025 ‘Sudeley Castle’ running at speed through Bathampton. (below)

(Below) Footplate view of a Cornation class loco No. 46226 ‘Duchess of Norfolk’

Pictured below is a 1P shunting engine belonging to a class that were built between the years of 1874 and 1900. The class eventually numbered 280, of which 95 survived to carry the BR totem. The original ‘exposed’ footplate betrays the engines age - a feature that was retained, unlike the alterations to the firebox and top fittings made to ‘modernise’ the design. One of the class (No. 41708) survives on the Keighley and Worth Valley line

41844

In complete contrast to the express loco’s depicted above, the picture below shows LMR type 2-6-2 tank No. 41316 leaving Argos Hill tunnel near Mayfield on the ‘Cuckoo Line’ which used to run from Eridge (SW of  Tunbridge Wells) to Polegate (a few miles North of Eastbourne on the South coast.) The line was closed in the middle sixties.

Saddle tank

Another tank loco, but can you guess what sort? For anyone spotting the distinct GWR characteristics, you are right! Underneath the heavily disguised outline created for the 1971 film ‘The Young Winston’ there is an 0-4-2  14xx tank locomotive!

In the picture on the left we see an unusual shot of a steam engine on a ferry...

Crossing the Solent to the Isle of Wight in 1971  is 0-4-0 saddle tank engine ‘Invincible’, making it’s way to the Wight locomotive socities’ track at Haven Street, where it was destined to be used for shunting duties.
