 Irene's Pages

These pages are a simple tribute to Irene Johnson, and have been set up on the Web so that anyone in the World can now enjoy her work. In her lifetime her fame was modest compared to some, but reached a noteable stepping stone when she managed to have a small anthology of  poems published by Arthur H. Stockwell Ltd. of  Ilfracombe, on sale for the sum of one shilling and ninepence; which is roughly 8.5 pence in today’s UK money. Whilst novels can be extremely difficult to place by unknown authors, some might say that poetry is even more difficult.

A few months later, one of  her poems also made an appearance  in a poetry compilation  by  the same publisher.

Irene and 'Moki'

Born and brought up in North Cheam, Surrey, Irene moved North of the River Thames to Barnet Hertfordshire, where she lived until retirement. Initially settling for the East Coast seaside town of Aldeburgh, a few years later she moved on up the coast a few miles to the pretty little East Coast seaside town of Southwold, which clearly gave her plenty of inspiration for her artistic talents.

It is always interesting to see how an artist develops their favoured syle in the paintings they produce; with Irene’s easily identifiable ‘clean and neat’ impact, definitely establishing itself for her last few year’s works.

On this page we therefore start off with some of her earliest paintings, which show her desire to experiment with different techniques from an early age. The second page is devoted to her minature watercolours of Southwold and the surrounding area with the third giving some examples of  her poetry.

If you enjoy viewing the images and reading the poetry, please let us know by sending us an Email.

Whilst this painting might be of an ‘imaginary’ location, the inspiration is clearly derived from her love of the Lake District in Westmorland, UK, and the ‘Swallows and Amazons’ books of the well know children’s author Arthur Ransome.
