High resolution full sized images of the above two stills will be appearing on our Steam Railway Image CDROM Volume 2

a) Enjoy picturing the heyday of Britain’s Railways with a large finely detailed image?

b) Love standard gauge steam locomotives, be they powerful express variants or simply the quaint lines of a 100 year old 0-6-0 tank ?

c) Built model railways yourself, relying heavily on pictures of ‘full sized’ railways in order to add the details needed for realism?

d) Take an interest in the railway preservation movement and would like to see what is available at the present time before travelling?

If all or any of the above statements are true, then surely for the price of  12 UK pounds  INCLUSIVE OF UK POSTAGE (please email me for International rates), you cannot afford to be without a copy of our NEW railway image CD-ROM?

Appealing to a number of different areas of railway interest, the Hurstmereclose Railway Image CD-ROM contains 400 full screen high resolution images featuring station architecture, period signalling equipment, lineside accessories, not forgetting those all important locomotives and rolling stock, all previously unpublished and taken in the first half of 2001.

Of course, the number of loco’s in steam featured for each line was entirely dependant on what happened to be running on the day of my visit. On occasions there were as many as three, whilst with others there were sadly none.

Whilst there are a good selection of locomotives featured in the CD-ROM image collection, a lot of railway station ‘atmosphere’ pictures are present as well, which in my opinion, are just as important as the trains that ran through them.

The images which appeal to me most are those you can display on a 21” computer monitor across the full screen with pin-sharp detail. For the technically minded, almost all of the images are at least a true 1024x768 pixels, with a number of specials (where even more detail is required) at 1280x960 pixels. To give some idea how sharp this can be on a computer monitor, I took a picture of a large period train timetable on the Kent and East Sussex Railway. Not only can one read all of the timings of the trains, but also the printer’s name and address in the small print at the very bottom!

To show one of these pictures full size for evaluation purposes, click on the image below to sample the quality of one of the CD-ROM images. Please remember that this image may take several minutes to download!

You are of course welcome to print out any number of your favourite images from the collection for your own enjoyment if you feel so inclined; but all we ask is that you don’t make copies of the CD-ROM for other people as I’m sure you agree, we’re not exactly charging a great deal for it!  If you wish to use any of the images for purposes other than this, such as posting on another web site or for use in another form of publication, we ask that you contact us first. Hopefully if CD-ROM Number 1 is a success, I  look forwards to compiling a comparable set of images for the second.

In response to several enquiries about the actual content of the CDROM, click HERE to see a block of 160 thumbnails representing several of the railways visited.

TO ORDER YOUR COPY TODAY

CD-ROM TECHNICAL DETAILS

Each copy of the HURSTMERECLOSE RAILWAY IMAGE CD-ROM contains approximately 400 images, most of which are 1024x768 pixels in size. A handful are slightly smaller where cropped, or at a higher resolution of a true 1280x960 pixels when extra detail was commanded.

All images are JPEG encoded and most have a Paintshop Pro 4 browse file in the directory for thumbnails if you happen to be using this viewing package.

The Video clips on the limited run JUBILEE ISSUE CDROM are MPEG1 encoded, with a size of 320x240, 24 frames per second and 44.1KHz stereo sound. A minimum spec. PC with Pentium P75, Win95, 32M RAM and a 16 speed CDROM drive gave a slightly jerky image but was still perfectly watchable.

The CD-ROM itself is a CDR type which is readable in almost all PC computer CDROM drives. The only ones we’ve not been able to see it running on were a couple of old double-speed drives in the spares cupboard. We  CANNOT however, guarantee that other OS or computer systems will read the files at this point in time. We will post a note in this column as soon as we have been able to ascertain this information either one way or the other.
