 U Class SR 2-6-0 No. 31806

Originally built in 1926 as a  2-6-4 ‘K’ class  tank locomotive, the Southern Railways numbered A806 as 31806 when it was rebuilt into a 2-6-0 tender locomotive in 1928. The locomotive then worked continuously up to June 1964 at which time it was withdrawn from British Rail service and sent to the Woodham Brothers scrapyard at Barry docks in South Wales.

Pictured here in 1966 between two locomotives; GWR Castle Class 4-6-0 No. 5043 ‘Earl of Mount Edgcumbe’ and sister engine No. 31638, the engine was destined to spend a total of 12 years and 4 months deteriorating in the sea air before being moved to the Mid- Hants Railway (The Watercress Line) in October 1976. Here it was put into store for nearly 3 years before restoration commenced.
